5 Algebra Mistakes Every Student Makes (And How to Fix Them)

1. Forgetting to Apply Operations to the Whole Side

The mistake: Adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing only part of one side of the equation instead of the whole thing.

Example:

3x + 5 = 20

Some students subtract 5 only from the "3x" instead of the whole left side, leading to errors.

The fix: Whatever you do to one side, you must do to every term on both sides.

3x + 5 − 5 = 20 − 5

3x = 15

2. Mixing Up Negative Signs

The mistake: Losing track of negative signs when expanding brackets or moving terms across the equals sign.

Example:

−(x − 4) often gets wrongly simplified as −x − 4 instead of −x + 4.

The fix: Distribute the negative sign to every term inside the bracket. Slow down and rewrite each term with its correct sign before combining anything.

3. Combining Unlike Terms

The mistake: Adding terms that aren't actually the same "type," like combining x terms with x² terms.

Example:

3x + 2x² is not 5x³, they're different terms and can't be combined.

The fix: Only combine terms with the exact same variable and power. 3x and 2x can combine. 3x and 2x² cannot.

4. Skipping the Order of Operations

The mistake: Solving left to right instead of following BIDMAS/PEMDAS (Brackets, Indices, Division/Multiplication, Addition/Subtraction).

Example:

2 + 3 × 4 is not 20 - multiplication comes first, so it's 2 + 12 = 14.

The fix: Always check brackets and powers first, then multiplication/division, then addition/subtraction even within algebraic expressions.

The mistake: Solving for x and moving on without checking if the answer actually works. 

The fix: Plug your answer back into the original equation. If both sides match, you've got it right. This single habit catches most careless errors before they cost you marks.
